beaucarnea_gracilisBeaucarnea is a fun species of succulent plants from Southern Mexico. They are characterized by a large mound shaped trunk that gets fat above ground and topped with a grass-like canopy. The most common species, Beaucarnea recurvata, has a very round caudex that can grow to two meters wide. The trunk supporting the green canopy is narrow and can grow to ten feet tall. A more uncommon species Beaucarnea gracilis grows a fat wide trunk from top to bottom and may have several thick branches, each with it's own green canopy. We grow Beaucarnea outside here in Las Vegas, where we regular see high twenties in December and January. However, they will get damaged in a deep freeze.
